Editorial Photographer Syracuse

If you are searching for an editorial photographer in Syracuse, it means you are likely searching for a very specific and narrowly defined type of a photographer.

And in your search, you have a ton of hits returned from your web search that include wedding and social photography such as high school seniors and such. You know, the folks who say : ”I can do that too”.

A specialist Syracuse editorial photographer

My work is narrowly focused in the corporate and editorial realm.

Visiting my website you won’t see a “general store” which advertises transmission repairs, live bait, stump grinding, snow plowing, remodeling, driveway sealing … you get the idea.

What you will see are images that were created for publications, with an understanding of what editors need and what publications require. Not only the deadlines and the production schedules, but how to ask the right questions of editors, art directors and writers so that I really understood the intended direction of the shoot.

My experience as a Syracuse editorial photographer

My career began as a full time photojournalist after graduating from Syracuse University’s SI Newhouse School of Public Communications. Working for newspapers gave me a firm grounding in the needs of a living breathing publication. And how to work “to” a story, creating the images that visually report what the story is about. Leaving newspapers, I moved in to handling assignments for more business publications. This required developing a broader skill set in lighting.

As time progressed, I learned to take those skills as a visually agile photojournalist and combine them with the lighting skills I’d honed so that lots of photos could be produced in a limited amount of time for the assignments I received.

A case study of this editorial photo from Syracuse

This is one of the brewmasters from Middle Ages Brewing Company. The assignment was to document the operations of the brewery over a very short couple-hour window that they had available.

Working primarily as a photojournalist, parts of the process were documented as they happened. With my photojournalism experience, I was able to think through and pre visualize what I wanted. That meant some lighting was set in advance, improving the quality and mood of many of the images without disrupting the work.

And of course, portraits are always needed. I love being able to “find” portraits that rise up as people are doing their work. But you can’t always rely completely on the fact that those will happen. So setting up some small lighting and having a portrait set and pre visualized is critical to me. That way a key subject can just be dropped in for a minute or two and a formal portrait, such as this one, can be made.
